3 day course 18th 19th & 20th May 2012. Make a real rocking horse of your own with instruction from Anthony Dew.
These courses are aimed at those wishing to make a traditional carved Rocking Horse. Renowned expert Anthony Dew will show you the traditional approach to Rocking Horse carving using hand tools. Previous carving experience in not necessary all skill levels are accommodated, and each student will successfully complete the carving of a Rocking Horses head during the Course!
The course fee includes:-
Three days individual tuition with master carver Anthony Dew
Use of workshop equipment and all carving tools (but you are very welcome to bring your own)
Lunch, usually cold meats and salads, as well as refreshments
Head & Neck Timber for Medium Size Horse, prepared ready for you to commence carving. (Several alternative medium size heads will be offered. You may upgrade to Large at an additional cost of £15.)
Carve-a-Head courses run 10am till 4pm on the first two days, 10am to 3pm on the final day (but we will start earlier and run later if need be!), with a maximum of 6 students on each course.
These Carve-a-Head course take place in our purpose built carving studio. We shall look at many aspects of traditional Rocking Horse making including carving techniques, gouge grinding/sharpening, the use of hand carving tools (incl. power carvers) and different makers approaches etc.
Course Fee: 3 day Carve-a-Head Course - £280.00 per person (Price includes VAT- members or Friends of The Guild of Rocking Horse Makers receive a 5% discount)
Accommodation is not included, but we can recommend several local B & Bs, pubs or hotels, and will send you a list on request. (Please note: The Course does not cover the laminated designs.)
CANCELLATIONS AND REFUNDS To cancel your place please inform us at least 14 days in advance. A deposit charge of £45 will be made on all cancellations.

Measurements Required Measurements are needed for this product. Please measure your horse carefully using the guide below - either in inches or millimetres and enter your measurements in the boxes provided. Important note if you are unable to supply measurements now we will still take your order but before processing it will contact you for the required information.
Body Measurements
A Length of body measured straight along the side. (This measurement indicates the size of the horse; we need measurement (a) even if you are only ordering a bridle.)
B Are there metal staples fixed into the side ofthe horse from which to hang the stirrup leathers? If YES, how far apart are they? (If NO, we shall supply an alternative for hanging stirrup leathers.)
C Length of saddle top.
D Measurement across saddle block from side to side. (Leave out if your horse has no saddle block.)
E Girth, measured right round horse's belly.
Head Measurements
Pencil a mark at each side of the horse's head, slightly below and behind the base of the ears, as shown in the drawing. Call these marks XI and X2 and carefully measure as follows:
F X1 to comer of mouth.
G X1 to X2, measured under the throat.
H X1 to X2, measured over the top of the neck.
I X1 to X2, measured round the front of the head.
J Right round the nose, just above the nostrils.
K Width of mouth from side to side (for the bit). (The buckle-on bridles we usually supply are like small versions of real ones & and there is a fair amount of adjustment on the buckled straps.)
