I made my first rocking horse, an early version of a Swinger with plain head, some 35 years ago, when I drove past The Rocking Horse Shop in Holme-upon-Spalding Moor every day. Since then I have always wanted to make a carved one just like my Dad made for me back in 1953. As my great-grandson\'s 1st birthday was approaching, this chair horse seemed an ideal first project before trying larger horses. The kit was delivered within a few days of ordering, and the initial constuction was so straight forward (and cuts out the \'boring\' bits of cutting out all that plywood). Carving the head was accomplished with a B&D powerfile, round and flat files, and various grades of sandpaper, then the whole horse given three coats of antique clear satin. The hardest part was applying a name decal to the bows using water-slide paper. The completed horse has now been delivered and received much praise from everyone.

A fantastic way to start learning the art of rocking horse making

The pack contained everything needed to make a superb little rocking horse chair, I used the plywood kit as a template to make one out of hardwood for my new granddaughter, it took a while as I needed to laminate a lot of the parts, the head and rockers etc. The plywood kit will be made for her and will stay with me for when she comes to visit, it would have been great if I could have bought a hardwood pack.

    My first carved horse

This was the first horse head I have attempted. Following the instruction sheet I proceeded slowly and found no problems at all. I produced a very acceptable finished product which my 1 year old grandson loves. Looking forward to making my next. For anyone contemplating their first horse give it a go it's enjoyable, fun and not as difficult as you may imagine.

My first serious bit of wood work for over 50 years.

I made this horse for our first grand dughter who was born in Feb 2015. At 2 years old she loves to ride "Seren Fach". My last attempt at wood work was a stool I made in school 54 years ago which is still going strong. My horse was featured on the readers page of "The Woodworker" magazine in the September 2015 issue, with a plug for The Rocking horse shop :O) Three weeks ago a friend of my daughter asked if I could make him one as a gift for his cousin who is expecting a baby in May. So, its off to the shed I go to de-rust the tools and dig out the patterns I made for the original, followed by a trip to B&Q for a sheet of 3/4" ply. Let the Games Begin.

Bought this for my Grandaughter was very confident with the general woodworking but had never done any carving, so I was a bit apprehensive about carving the head. I took my time and even printed some pictures of horses heads from the internet for reference, the finished article was way beyond my expectations and to say im pleased is an understatement. I quite fancy doing more carving now
